Parkinson’s

People living with Parkinson's Disease have extremely complicated and time critical medicine regimes.

Sometimes people with Parkinson's may need to take up to 8 doses a day, every two hours, or more.

Everyone has a compound in their brain called dopomine. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that carries signals between the nerve cells of the brain and other vital areas in the body. Dopamine controls emotions, movements, and the sensations of pleasure and pain.

Dopomine usually reproduces itself during sleep.  However, for people with Parkinson's the Dopamine is not reproduced adequately enough, which causes them to have symptoms of Parkinson's disease.

Symptoms can vary from person to person, and can change over time as the disease progresses.  However, symptoms may include some, or a combination of the following; 

Motor Symptoms of Parkinson's visible from the outside

• Slow movement (bradykinesia)
• Stiff or Rigid muscles
• Resting tremor or shaking
• Stooped Posture and Balance
• Gait problems such as shuffling, freezing, drooping shoulders, and lack of arm swing
• Reduced facial expressions known as masking

Non-Motor Symptoms of Parkinson's

• Cognitive impairment ranging from mild memory impairment through to dementia
• Anxiety and Depression
• Sleep difficulties
• Loss of smell
• Constipation
• Speech becoming quiter, quicker, slurred, breathy, hesitant, or hoarse
• Swallowing difficulties
• Writing difficulties
• Vision impairment

When Parkinson's is diagnosed medicine is prescribed to replace the Dopomine in the brain. 

It can be extremely difficult to work out the levels of medicine required, especially when the patient does not take the medicine as prescribed.

If a patient is late with administration of medicines then the symptoms can be affected.  As little as 5 or 10 minutes late can make a big difference to a person living with Parkinson's.  Once they are off track it can take people with Parkinson's a long time to get back on track.
